JOHN WAS IN THE TRANSPORTATION COMPANIES, WHICH MANAGED THE AMMO PIER AND HAULED AMMO. AT ONE TIME HIS PIER GOT HEAVILY SHELLED AND DESTROYED. AFTER RETURNING, HE SPENT A YEAR AT YUMA PROVING GROUNDS IN ARIZONA. THEN RETURNED HOME AND JOINED THE ARMY RESERVES. HE WAS AWARED VARIOUS MEDALS AND COMMENDATIONS. HE SERVED AS A MEDIC IN VIETNAM DURING THE WAR. WHEN HE RETURNED TO THE STATES, HE STAYED IN THE ARMY AND EVENTUALLY RETIRED IN 1989 AS AN E-7. SHE WAS ALSO SELECTED FOR THE PRESTIGIOUS DON CHRISTIANSON AWARD. IN 2007, SHE WAS SELECTED PETTY OFFICER SECOND CLASS AND IN 2012, SHE WAS PROMOTED TO PETTY OFFICER FIRST CLASS. SONDRA WAS THE 2014 SENIOR SAILER OF THE YEAR AND WAS SELECTED AS CHIEF PETTY OFFICER IN 2015. SONDRA RETIRED IN 2022 AFTER SERVING 20 YEARS IN THE NAVY.
